That looks great, thank you for implementing those!
I'd personally add one more portrait expression for characters inflicted with the Poison status, but I understand there are priorities and time constraints to consider.

First of all I love the blog. Thanks for doing this! I'ts getting me really excited about the game. I also love the portraits. They are great. I'm not sure how much trouble it would be and as Pankratz, I understand there are priorities, but I wonder if it would be possible to discolour the face (yellowish or greenish) of a poisoned/diseased character. On the otherhand if the tooltip shows this clearly then I suppose its fine to do without them. Does the tooltip show a symbol (lixe a skull) over the portrait like Grimrock or Baldur's Gate portraits do?

Tool tips take care of status effects pretty well, I might miss the foaming mouth of insanity though haha. But the question is how many portraits will be available to each race? Assuming I play more than once, I like the option to have a single race party and am just curious if I will have options or have to use 4 portraits provided to a race?

As FORGOTTENL said, a great blog indeed! Love this Open Dev approach.

When I first saw the first draft on this page I didn't expect it to be a female Dwarf! It's actually kind of cute haha! Great job; I like it. I actually like every single male draft as well; I even think they’re better than the reworked version. It would be nice if all of those would be implemented ;) But it obviously has to fit with the rest so I believe you guys know what you’re doing and it will always be subjective.

Generally, I have to say, I’m pleasantly surprised with what you’ve shown us so far. Keep up the good work and thanks (trying) to revive such a good game!

I'm quite amazed how friendly and positive the members are here, is this the internet? eitherwho as everyone here already said, this looks great, and thank you so much for sharing. MMX team I must say that your game is probably the one I'm most hyped about at this time, I'm so looking forward to getting back to my beloved MM with a new setting a story, I truly am grateful that you and Ubisoft are doing this for all us long time (and the to-be) fans out here! Btw. the dwarfs right above this comment field looks awesome! kudos!

It never came to me that you actually made female dwarf adorable!

Great portrait!

And anybody agree that this female human looks like Lea Michele?

Only two faces per race/gender? Only three expressions per character? That's a shame. I was hoping that a modern game would have MORE options than a clunky old one, not fewer. Ah well!

Come on! 3 facial states per person, is way too few! I remember old M&M IV having different state for poisoned, insanity, slept etc. I cannot imagine that adding more than 3 states is a lot of work after all! If you want to call the game "Legacy" then you should respect the legacy of M&M as well! Please!

Maybe you could add small icons and display them in top-left corner of a character portrait to show different status? Something like: insane - brain icon, poisoned - green bottle with skull, diseased - medkit or stethoscope icon, stone condition - hmm... stone icon :), paralyzed - chain/handcuffs or indian blowpipe icon, sleep - moon/pillow/bed icon, eradicated - small pile of dust, weakness - maybe crossed dumbbell, curse - voodoo doll or something.

Thanks for your suggestions, and thanks for being so positive about the game and the blog! Or, to say it with Andreas.Hjelms words: "Is this the internet?" :)
And to those who have doubts or aren't pleased with what they see: we appreciate your feedback, too. Although we can't follow every suggestion, feedback from the community has already helped shaping the game, and it will in the future.

["Does the tooltip show a symbol (lixe a skull) over the portrait like Grimrock or Baldur's Gate portraits do?"] -> No, but there will be a symbol within the portrait that indicates something is wrong with the character.

__________________________________________________________________

["But the question is how many portraits will be available to each race?"] -> There will be two male and two female portraits for each race.

I overlooked the part where you said you would only have three different expressions. Why would you reduce it? Different facial expressions to show your characters status became such an important ingredient to the game which differentiates the Might & Magic series from other classic RPG’s. I looked into the data files of M&M6 and M&M7 which had 53-56 different facial expressions and as far as I remember M&M8 had even more. I know some are made to make it look like an animation but it’s still a huge difference with only 3 expressions. The characters from the older titles (which I believe you’re aiming for) had more expressions as well. And even though you already have some great expressions, looking at the female Dwarf portraits. But I presume you already made your decisions so let’s hope it will be done for Might & Magic XI? haha ^_^

Well, I guess that I am “odd-man-out” on this one, but three expressions seem fine to me. Too many expressions and it can get difficult to tell which is which. Some of the old versions had lots of pics, but some of them were just random look-left, or look-right ones, and others were smiles for when they hit something in combat and frowns when they missed.
Yes, all those faces added a bit to the games. And yes, they could be fun. But I am pretty sure that they added a lot of lines to the programs and more lines equals not only increased costs, but also increased chances for bugs/glitches. So… While more expressions would be nice, I can easily live without them.
I WILL miss the foaming at the mouth for “crazy” look. If you only add one more – make it that one.

Two portraits for every race and gender are not a lot. This spells doom for my red-haired human gutter rat!
Easily modded? Only if we have access to the official portraits' individual layers...

Excellent work. I am very pleased with this addition. One of my favorite things about Might Magic is all of the little "charm" they put everywhere. The facial expressions were one of those neat charming little details. the more the merrier of this kind of development I say!

Wow! this game is looking great so far and thanks for making the game along with the fans, a thing some other game developers should learn from. I'm really exited to see what you can do to M&M with modern technology !

You're really making a good job on the uniqueness of the characters, awesome! Love the tattoos and stuff and the default characters in the other post as well.
Although more expressions would be nice for like insanity and stuff it was hilarious in old MM but anyway if there is no time better to focus on other things at least these basic expressions are great to have as it brings back the nostalgia :-) Thanks!

The actual fact that UI will be "alive" is great.

I also have to complement the choice of artstyle. In such a games as MM I really prefer artistic side and a paint than 3D animations that are pretty often not that great looking.

Great work!

Hello all and thanks a lot for your comments!
You can imagine that the team was looking forward to having lots of different expressions in the game, as well. However more expressions do not contribute to the clarity of feedback, and of course there are always priorities to consider. I for my part believe that having three expressions is a good solution for MMX.

It is awful. Really it is impossible to use experience of the sixth part and to make portraits of photos of actors??? Itsnot WoW!

One thing I'd like to suggest is for the 'fainted' (unable to do combat) face, have their head tilted to the side like they're actually passed out. The face you have for that now just looks like their eyes are closed and they're beat up a bit. By tilting them to the side it will look more natural. (like what Might&Magic VI has for their character portraits).

Great art ;)

Though I'd also add more portraits according to conditions (enraged, mad, poisoned, paralyzed, sleeping, drunk, etc...).

The most costly solution (but way cooler) is to have new portraits drawn... But if resources are limited, cheaper solutions (in terms of assets) could be considered... like an overlay color (red for enraged, green for poisoned..etc..), or icon?

Just my 2 cents ;)

I Agree It Look Very Good And Great Job With The Dwarwes - I Agree With Pankratz with the adding later on of expression for caracthers inflicted with poison

Characters look great. The same style as in Wizardry 8. guess the 3 facial expressions are enough. Wiz8 had not much either. Just so they are not completely stiff and wooden.
