First of all, I am glad that you finally gave a kind of explanation that I can live with, concerning the movement choice. Your choice is understandable.
Second of all, I am ever more glad, that you mentioned the possibility of freemovement (MM6-like concept) in future installments. This is something that satisfies me deeply and I would say, that satisfies every fan of MM6-8.

Well. If you were making MMX free-movement, it'll be impossible to make MMXI turn-based.

Oops. I mean tile-based.

Please do NOT forget the replay value.
Don't let user created content be the only thing that keeps us from replaying the game over and over...
Don't get me wrong I love games that have tons of mods and such but the core game has to have some kind of replayability.

Praise be! As much as I loved Mandate, my love for VII, VIII, and IX was less with each iteration. The more freemove there was, the less I liked it. Sure, flying was cool and all, but...
I've played 1 and 9 once, and didn't finish either of them. I played 2 and 8 twice, and didn't finish the second playthrough. I played 3 and 7 thrice. I've played 6 four or five times, but I've played Xeen twice on floppy, three times on CD, and twice after getting it from GOG. I love Xeen. It was nearly perfection. Not quite as good as the original Dungeon Master (on Amiga), but still, I'd say Xeen was the second and third best tile based rpg of all time. With Anvil of Dawn coming in fourth.

Just please, you must include automapping. The lack of automapping is why I gave up on the new retro-wizardry and can't bring myself to play the old ones again.

I am very much looking forward to what you can accomplish with modern tech and turnbased, tilebased exploration/combat.

And could we have a spell caster who can also open a lock?

I'm 100% in for a completely turn-based RPG. Cheers to ubi and the team for actually making it happen.

As others have noted, i'd have prefer a free movement style gameplay with the option to switch to turn based, as it was available in M&M 6-8 (and 9 if you count that too).

That option to switch between turn based and real time combat was an essential part of M&M games for me. I can guess that it's possibly easier to build a gameplay style for a game that is solely turn based but i'd really like to see that option too, in M&M XI hopefully :)

I'm playing Legend of Grimrock and I'm enjoying it. If the next MM will be like that, go on!

Opting for the tile/grid-based movement combined with the turn-based combat system was the best decision you could have made, that's what makes me so excited to play this game. Should MMX prove to be successful and you decide to go for the full freedom of movement in the vein of MM6-9 in MMXI, please, please, PLEASE at least retain the turn-based combat. It's the soul of Might and Magic.

I completely understand the decision for tiled based movement like you said it is easier to make. But how small is the map going to be because of that? I got a little smile when i read that you considered to make a MM 6 style of a game ooh those days ;). I will buy and tell all my friends to buy a copy that it will be a reality some day.

Totally agreed! Making real-time M&M, like 6-8, is very hard today because of new standarts in genre. Smart choise, I hope the game will be great!

For me, my favourites are MM III - V, so I´m 100 percent with your design choice and the more I read, the more I look forward to the final output.

This game should be awesome. Stick with tile based. I'm sick of action-based "RPGs". We need a revival of turn based games for those of us that aren't twitch demons.. I was never a fan of FPS games and all "RPGs" are becoming these days are FPSs with stats.

What are the odds of redoing World of Xeen with modern graphics using this engine, BTW? lol

I've been waiting ages for somebody to notice that the old CRPG fans that created the PC market back in the day were still around.

Do me a big favor though, make sure this game is available on Steam and doesn't require any other thing to be loaded or visited to play it.. I don't want to have to log in to some other service after downloading it every time I play..

I have high hopes for this game. Its great that you guys are being given the freedom to make the game for a niche audience and not having to comprise it for the sake of appealing to mainstream gaming. World of Xeen stands as my favorite old school rpg, and I still go back to it and complelty finish it. It's eaten thousands of my hours and it is still compelling.

Thanks for this - an explanation I believe even diehard MM6+ fanatics can respect.
Of course, I hope you won't just go all Mandate of Heaven on us as soon as MMX meets resounding success and a sequel starts to look likely. I agree, there is space for and even the interest in a free-movement party-based RPG, but then there might be two separate strains of progression from there, one of each style.

Good post. So long as the grid-based games continue, Limbic and Ubisoft will recieve my money. I will not pay for a free-movement game.

Thanks for the answers and making the game tile based as SHUKFIR said it would be hard to go back from free moving to tile based. So I'm glade you are giving it a try. Thanks Julien can't wait to get more blog updates. I'm interested in seeing the tools -"easier to provide tools and editors for players to create their own adventures" would I be possible to have a map creation challenge pre-release using the tools ? I know that may be asking alot, but would be awesome to have the ability to have users maps/areas available day 1

Oh my LORD, I love you guys!!! Your approach to using your talents on gameplay versus "AAA" garbage is like a dream come true. I seriously cannot put into words how much this singular statement truly means to a hardcore fan of Might and Magic.

This makes me very happy. While I don't particularly like tile based movement, not only are you giving us reasoning behind your decision, but you're telling us that this is like a relaunch of old school RPGs which is even better. I like controlling multiple parties. I like having characters in a particular niche, not "My level 65 Skyrim character can do EVERYTHING IN THE GAME AND DO IT PERFECTLY" Which is not (in my mind) fun.

Thank you!!

I have very fond memories on the older Might & Magic games. So I'm very excited, to see that you're actually planning to create a "real" successor to those.

I'm a very happy camper, now.

Well, that sounds like a direct feedback to a comment I left yesterday.
Thanks for it and thanks for giving your point of view, I think the fans deserved it.
Your approach may indeed be the right one, 1 step back for 2 steps forward, at least it makes sense, now I'm impatient to see the results... and already hoping for M&M XI or XII in an M&M VI-like style.
Impress me with a good game, a strong scenario and I would even go with some extra bucks for a limited edition with cloth map, pretty manual with art work and leather-like cover. After all, it's Might and Magic X and it's not every year that see a 30 years old legend coming back to life. And now I start again missing Ultima, Wizardry and Bard's Tale series too...

Going tile-based was the right move for this game!!
Though, I'd also love to see a AAA M&M Rpg with free movement one day (i.e elder scrolls)...

PLEASE, DON'T NEVER MAKE AAA M&M FOR CASUAL GAMER WITH REAL TIME ACTION.
M&M IS A TURN bASED GAME FOR ACTION AND SHOULD STAY FOREVER LIKE THAT.

I hate AAA action rpg, It's not RPG.

I have to say when I was reading all the posts bashing MMX for going back to Tile Based movement I got worried the development team would cave in to their demands. THANK YOU for not doing that and really trying to make this game a Might and Magic sequel. Can't wait to try it out!

please dont make it tile-based. it makes you feel closed in a closet playing the game, i loved the feeling of MM9 and MM8. there is no movement when you fight enemies, you just face them and kill them? i would like to be able to walk around and fight, not just stand in front all the time like a dumbass. im annoyed that you make a more new game tile-based when MM9 was almost perfect in my opinion even MM8 that wasnt exactly tile-based. you have a limited sight when looking around when its tile-based i would like to have the experience of walking around and discovering the world more freely and having a really good time, im still exitd about the game but tile-based is a dissapointment for ME. i have love for the games but i have played many tile-based MM games already and haved my fill of it, i hope you and your team reads this, thanks.

I think that you underestimate the intelligence/adaptability of “modern” game players re: party-play, and over estimate the appeal of tile-based games to them. Being able to easily build one’s own dungeons is a nice touch that will be popular with some and never used by others. But thank you for being honest about the true rational… cost. I will probably want to see/play a demo before I decide to buy or not because while I liked 1-5, I did not fall in love with the games until 6. I still replay 6-9 at least once a year each, but rarely touch 1-5. Being able to only make 90 degree turns really isn’t very appealing to me.

I am playing MM8 right now and I love how fast the games moves. I can move around the map very quickly (especially once I got Fly) and the combat is very quick as well... i hope this speed of play is still there in MMX if you do tile play and turn based only combat

OMG, you've just killed еру most anticipated game of the year. If you make fights turn based it will be impossible to play. You destroy all the Might & Magic 6-8 spirit. It is really the saddest announcement of gamedev for me. So many hopes for that game and you've just killed all of them. Of course I wouldn't play it turn-based. It will not be real emotions of old school like 6-8 versions.

Dude, stop spamming around the whole blog. From the very first presentation of the Game on it was clear that MMX draws its spirit from the MMIII to MMV era. Well, that´s even more old school feel to it and for people like me who grew up with MMII to MMV, this is an extra dose of good old nostalgia, as the series didn´t start with MMVI. I don´t want to be rude, but you better play some skyrim for that realtime fps-rpg feel, MMX is not your cup of tee then...

I made my peace with tile based, although I think it would have been possible to not use tiles (like e.g. Wizardry 8). However I think this game will be one which will produce some nostalgic memories with my most liked game in the past which was Lands of Lore 1. Grimrock never produced this feeling in my mind, but the short gameplay demo of MMX did. I especially like the fact, that the areas of MMX look quite open and colorful - and not so depressing like many other dungeon scrollers.

Funny thing is that I preferred turn-based mode in MM6-8 instead real time. Of course I have rushed through legions of lowlevel skeletons in realtime, but most of all battles, especially tough ones, I used to play in turn-based mode.

Hi! I love Heroes 1 ,2 ,3 ,5 ,6 and Might & Magic 6, 7, 8.This confession was just to let you know how seriously i take this new project of M&M. Please don't blame the gamers for your decision doing a tile-based game. However you try to turn the history everybody knows the real successor of M&M was Mandate of Heaven. From the info you post i get that this game will be awesome for my phone. I hope you make enough money from this game to make real hardcore game after.I<3U but i love MM6,7,8 more;)

My thoughts about this might not even get heard, but if u do get the time to read this i vould like to say first of all. Grid based game is pretty nice actually cause u need to spend more time on your thinking on what to do next and so on.
Rly good brain practice. i have played mostly all MM series except the 9th one cause it didnt feel right. Dont know if it was the characters u played or if it was the enviorment.
But the best MM game was the 7th one.

MM7 was the best cause everything felt so awsome. The story. the landscaping and monsters and levling and going town to town for missions for expert and grandmaster skills and also the awsome card game in it that made me spend hours and hours on :D I vould love to see everything like that happen again and i hope there are more that feels the same. so please if u wanna go back to MM series please look up everything u and other ppl enjoyed from it to make the best god damn MM game ever. Please :D

I remember the first time casting FLY and just talking a birds eye view on all of the locations, it was a great moment for me.
