I am really curious about the other classes, if the freemage is not able to master every kind of elementary magic ;)

Sounds like the archer will be able to become Earth GM,...
mmh light magic sounds pretty much like a GM skill for a healer class like cleric.
But fire and water GM... hmmmmm no idea^^

You gonna make it hard for us to choose the party members - i like that!

By the way: does reaching paragon class unlock further skill development/limited skills before?
keep up the good work!

Can I just say how much I love the art style of this game. It looks great already. That first and second picture makes me want to explore the town. :D The Freemage looks intresting, but will there be an elemental mage? That can get to GM in Fire, Earth and Water?

The question is: Why Chosen of Elrath ?
Humans comes from different locations.
Lorewise, Chosen of Elrath would be fine if the Freemage came from the Holy Empire but then he would follow Elrath and shun Dark Magic.
From what I gathered, the Freemage seems free spirited and dabble in all kind of magic so he would rather come from the Silver Cities or the Free Cities...
Elrath has no place in these but Ylath, the traditional great dragon of humans, yes.
So why not Chosen of Ylath for him Instead ?

From information given above, I guess an Archmage is promoted from a freemage, right? Then it would be fun to ask what's the advanced title for a mage, or a mage class was removed? On the basis of old M&M games, every skills could be grandmastered by at least one class. So, it really depends on the settings of the other magical class(es) to decide whether a freemage is worth picking or not.

If the setting is like what DAFUNKJOKER has said, i.e. other magical skills can be grandmastered by an archer or other non-magical characters, I think they would be too strong as they can gm both melee and magic schools. And the freemage would be rather weak and worthless to pick unless air and dark schools are so powerful. It's hard to conclude and we need more information about other classes.

Thanks for your comments and questions :)

Yes the Archmage is promoted from a Freemage. You need the paragon class in order to reach Grand Master (the last level in the available grandmaster skills).

In regards to your questions about other classes: Yes, we'll have more classes than those 4 that have been announced so far. In regards to the cleric - maybe ;) All I can say is that there are still four more magical classes to come! Of course, we'll announce them on the blog! Stay tuned! ;)

Hmm... 4 new magical classes... Let me guess. Shaman for orcs, Druid for elves, Rune priest for dwarves and (maybe) cleric for humans. :)

Just a question ... How do we learn spells ? Hope it will be by buying/finding books like other MM !

Looks interesting. I wonder if each race's "Magic" class will only be able to grand master a few schools? Maybe those that can Grand Master 4 schools (Air, Water, Fire, Earth) can't get as high as Master in the others?

Druids (in 6/7) were able to Master elemental & self school skills, but not learn light & dark. Freemage can at least Master all of them which seems impressive. Perhaps the magic classes will differ only by which of the schools they can GM in?

I just want to say immediately that the overall art style is SPOT ON. You have retained the classic charm and colorfulness of the classic games. My heart is just melting, thank you so much!

And also, I absolutely LOVED Wizardry VIII. :) It was surely one of the most tragically underrated crpgs ever. You guys are really onto something special here. Keep up the good work.

Another exciting post, I know this is about the Freemage and that looks very exciting, I'm interested in seeing the mechanics put in play from the inventory screen of the broken or repairable helmet. Also love what you have done with the skill trees with the stages in needed before being able to go up a skill set.Ranking the skills from max level to lowest attainable level is great as well good to see common scene has prevailed so users don't have to search for the natural skills.Mini-map = pimp

Thanks a lot for all your kind comments & questions!! :)

Some quick answers to some questions:

You'll learn spells when you buy them at the merchants in the arcane libraries, which are spread all over the world.

There are some earlier (social/miscellaneous) skills that we won't have in MMX. However there might be the one or the other available in a different form. I.e. we'll have a Negotiator as Hireling (instead of the merchant skill).

I'd like to have the "higher skill =more skill points cost" system from MM6+. But it doesn't seem to be that system... (Take a look at 1:10 here:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K4IxhUtZlgY)

This is bad. The system in MM6 encouraged you to spend points in multiple skills, because low skill were easier to get to a higher levels. So you could give your character a "broader education". In the MMX system you will only spend points on your primary skills.
Could you give us the MM6+ Sytem back? :D

Have you seen those silhouettes in "inventory"?

They're dragons!

It sounds like it will be pretty hard to keep one alive until he/she reaches a level high enough to be worthwhile... unless you have some sort of “formation” function. (9 had one but it didn’t work very well. Individual opponents in melee combat still hit the mage standing at the back of the formation behind a row of “tanks”. But it was better than nothing.)
Or if the “dodge” skill actually works in this one. (Perhaps allowing a higher level of expertise would be in order?)

Why the name "Freemage"? Sorry for the probably stupid question. I am old school, so in my opinion maybe "Mage" or "Wizard" would fit much better.

I have been following the development of this game for many days, but just now i have registred myself here to ask question, which wasn't asked in this topic... You told us about The Advanced Class of the Freemage "Archmage", but what about "Lich"? I am not a maniac, but for me possibility to create lich always was one of unique features of MM series, that why i prefer MM7 and 8. I hope to see it in MMX.

Yes. Liches were fun. I especially like when their voices/personalities change after they became living skeletons.

Character creation and the Freemage look really good. I will miss the miscellaneous skills though.

Hi all,

Thanks again for your new comments and questions!

@julgonbar: What we call “Wizards” in Ashan are specifically Wizards of the Seven Cities. Freemages are Wizards who chose to leave the Seven Cities (on purpose or because they were exiled) and relocate in the Free Cities.

Liches were weird. I mean, if your character was killed as a lich, and you used Raise Dead to bring him back to life, he was still a lich. Yeah, I know, "gameplay and story segregation" but it still doesn't make much sense.

Okay, two questions:

First, what exactly is the "Primordial" skill? Is this a new form of magic?

Also, I see that a Freemage can reach Grand Master rank four skills, but two of those skills are highlighted in pink and the other two are highlighted in orange. What's the difference there?

I really hope we have multiple choices as far as what advanced class to go with each character. It adds allot of depth to the game and is one of the things that made the old MM games great. Advancement quests to get to higher classes in general add more of a feeling of accomplishment to leveling up.

Lets say the freemage can do a quest to become a master wizard and then can choose to either do the quest for lich or archmage. Each one having different grandmaster skills and class abilities.

After playing through first act I have the following observations:
This class has access to everything yay - but your also chugging mana potions like an alcoholic British guy just off work.
More skill in a magic tree should make utility spells from that tree last longer. Otherwise your casting the same spells again every 5 mins... and wheres the fun in that?

Also given Freemages have so many spells I was in debate all the time for what ones occupied my hotbar. Need more hotbar like yesterday.

Further hmmm - You should get some small mana buff for putting points into your magic skills.

Presumably to help pay for higher costing spells, but it addresses the problem of a mana pool lacking both at the beginning of the game and further on when you want to "nuke" a couple enemies while healing the party.

Do you spend any points into vitality while leveling up your mage?

Or do you take the endurance talent? My mage is way too squishy i need to do something about it
